Finding the perfect au pair made easy

Cultural Care Au Pair offers 3 Ways to Match
Cultural Care Au Pair host families now have the ability to review even more applications and au pair profiles with our new 3 Ways to Match, a program feature that let’s host families select the style of matching that best suits their needs. Host families can now search through multiple candidates on their own timeframe, set an appointment for a consultative matching session or work one-on-one with a placement manager who carefully selects possible matches. Best of all, our 3 Ways to Match allows you to enjoy the benefits of all three matching styles to help you find the right au pair for your family.

To get started
Whether you’re a new family to Cultural Care Au Pair or have already hosted an au pair, our 3 Ways to Match makes it easy for you to begin reviewing au pair candidates right away. Simply fill out your new or repeat application. Once it’s processed, you can log into your account and begin matching. Here’s how it works:

Personalized, exclusive matching
Enjoy the benefits of our trademark one-on-one matching. Your placement manager will select carefully screened applications for you to review based on your family’s unique needs. Each au pair is exclusively reserved for your family’s review, which means no two families are contacting the same reserved au pair candidate at the same time.

Consultative matching
Review our pool of au pair candidates in real time by setting up a consultative matching appointment by phone with your placement manager. This highly effective method allows you to carve out time with your placement manager to review available candidates who are not being reviewed by other families. At the end of the appointment, you have the opportunity to have up to three candidates maximum reserved for your family exclusively.

Search & Select
An enhancement to our current profile review system, this new feature offers families the ability to build a list of au pair profiles available for review. Families can narrow the search field and request, for example, a driver, a second year au pair or someone available now. If you find a candidate of interest to you, you may add the au pair to your list and notify your placement manager of your interest by clicking the Notify Placement Manager button. Your placement manager will review your suggested matches and place up to three of those matches into your host family account for further review of their full application.

Sample & Save - try our 3 “Ways to Match” risk free
Now for a limited time only, host families who apply to Cultural Care Au Pair will have the opportunity to try our 3 Ways to Match FREE. New families who submit an application from January 14th to January 19th, 2010 and take an au pair into their home by October 22, 2010 will have the $75 application fee waived, in addition to our $275 au pair selection fee waived. In addition, families applying will also receive a $500 discount off the program fee - a total savings of $850!

There’s never been a better time to begin your search for an au pair. For more information about our 3 Ways to Match or our limited-time-only $850 discount, contact your local childcare coordinator.

PLEASE DO SO ASAP

CHRISTMAS PARTY

Location: Dry Creek Crossing Club house (circular building in the middle of the complex) For map quest purposes use the following address.. 9059 E Panorama Circle Centennial CO 80112
My cell: 720-810-3722
My home office number: 303-221-4672
Date: Dec 5th

INFO FOR AP’s
Time: 2:30 – 6 pm. Au pair will be required to pay $5 each –this is to cover the $75 cost to rent the clubhouse, décor and food. Since there is a limit to the number of people who can attend we will have to ask that the AP’s do not bring friends to this event.

We will be doing a White Elephant gift exchange while we are there. Here is the description that I sent out to my AP’s last year in case you want to just copy and paste it into your email to them.

WHITE ELEPHANT GIFT EXCHANGE

Please bring a wrapped gift. Cost of gift should be around $15.
How it works: Everyone brings a wrapped gift and puts them under the tree. All participants draw a number (from a hat) to determine their order. The participant with #1 unwraps any gift from the pile and then shows it to everyone. Each successive participant, in the order determined from the drawing, can either
1) “steal” an already opened gift (if there’s one they really like) OR
2) be adventurous and go for a wrapped gift from the pile.
If the participant chooses to steal, the person whose gift is stolen now repeats their turn and either 1) steals another person’s gift (they cannot immediately steal back the gift that was just stolen from them) or 2) unwraps a new gift. A gift can only be stolen 3 times after the 3rd time whoever has it gets to keep it. J

Overview of Spain

Sure it’s the land of Picasso, ancient Christian aqueducts and the best ham in the world, but Spain also offers an alluring blend of pristine beaches, glaring discos and exquisite Moorish, Gothic, and Art Nouveau architecture. The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao will amaze your viewing senses, but take a stroll through the Camino de Santiago or hunt for a bargain at the El Rastro flea market in Madrid and you will feel just like a local in no time.

Teachers working abroad become enamored with Spain and are quickly consumed by all the activities available to them. For the truly heightened experience, see a live bullfight, or catch Real Madrid in action on the soccer pitch. Marvelous food, splendid wine and a truly exemplary people wait in every city-square and around every winding, cobbled pathway.

Highlights of
Living in Spain

Explore the amazing, whimsical architecture of Gaudi’s Parc Guell in Barcelona

Go bargain hunting in El Rastro flea market in Madrid

Party through the night during Valencia’s Las Fallas

Eat home-cooked paella, or fabada asturiana (a heavy white bean-based stew)

Drink red wine from the Ribera del Duero region or a Voll Damm beer

Overview of Chile

Don’t let the size of the country fool you, it is rich with resources, sites, economic wealth and a liveliness befitting the nickname “the end of the world” for its location on the southern tip of South America.

There is a warmth to Chile’s people and working as an English teacher, you will become all too familiar with the generosity of your students, as well as your newly acquired friends and neighbors. Often men and women kiss each other on the cheek when saying hi and goodbye. All this will become second nature to you in no time, along with cowboys, street markets and the staple of the Chilean diet: empanadas fritas (fried pastries with ground beef and spices).

Highlights
of Living in Chile

Take in Santiago’s cityscape from Terraza Neptuno on Cerro Santa Lucia.

Go skiing and hit the slopes of the high Cordillera in Middle Chile.

Travel to the southern tip of Chile, considered to be ‘the end of the world’, and watch the breaching whales.

Stand next to one of the colossal Moais of Easter Island (Rapa Nui).

Eat empanadas fritas (fried pasties with ground beef and spices) or a completo (a hot dog topped with avocado, tomatoes, and mayonnaise).

Sip on Chile’s most popular drink, a foamy pisco sour (brandy with lemon juice, powdered sugar and egg white)

•	The opportunity for more travel and sightseeing
•	Continued Basic Insurance: Au pairs are able to stay in the States with continued basic insurance at no cost to them. They also have the opportunity to buy Extended Insurance.
•	24-hour emergency service
•	Local support

Additional benefits to extending with a new family include:
•	The opportunity to explore a new area of the state or country
•	The chance to get to know a new family and meet a new group of au pairs. Au pairs who are considering a move to a new family for their extension term need your support. They may need to know and hear from you that it is okay to change families. In fact, they should change families if it will help fulfill their own personal dreams and needs. Your guidance during this decision-making process will enable them to feel good about their decision to say goodbye to their current family and hello to a new one.

Host Family Benefits of Extending
•	Children benefit from another year with a trusted au pair. The au pair is confident about how to care for the children, how to discipline them, how to make them feel loved and safe.
•	Time and energy savings. Extension families avoid that period of uncertainty or “getting used to one another.” There is no need to train a new au pair or worry about whether or not she is a good driver. Extension au pairs are familiar with the family’s schedule, routine, expectations and personalities so there is no “ramp up” time in a busy household.
•	Peace of mind and consistency! Keeping a trusted caregiver in the home for another year is priceless.
•	A substantial savings on the program fee.
•	Guaranteed childcare for the extension term. In the event of a transition, Cultural Care Au Pair will find another au pair. We can not guarantee uninterrupted care, but we will do our best to find the best match possible for every dedicated host family.
•	24-hour emergency service.
•	Local support.
Length
Au pairs can extend for either 6, 9 or 12 months. Au pairs can only extend one time and once the extension length is chosen and requested it can not be changed.
Deadlines
Au pairs extending with the same family must submit their extension application online 60 days prior to the end of an au pairs’ first year. Au pairs extending to a new family must apply online by 75 days prior to the end of the au pair’s first year and the au pair must be placed with a family by 45 days prior to the end of their year. If an au pair or host family misses the deadlines mentioned, it still may be possible to extend and the au pair should contact the Extension Program Director.
Au Pair Extension Fee
Au pairs must pay a $246 Extension Processing Fee, a non-refundable payment due when sending in Extension Enrollment paperwork.
Educational Component
An au pair must complete his or her educational component requirement in their first year by the last legal working day to be eligible to extend. 9- & 12-month extension au pairs must take 6 credits in their extension program term, and the host family is responsible for up to $500. 6-month extension au pairs must take 3 credits in their extension program term and the host family is responsible for up to $250. Au pairs can not “carry over” extra educational credits earned from their first year into their extension term.
Vacation
9- & 12-month extension au pairs receive two weeks (14 days) of paid and 6-month extension au pairs receive one week (7 days) of paid vacation during their extension.
Travel
Extension au pairs can travel to Mexico, Canada and the adjacent islands without having to renew their J1 visa first. Au pairs can travel outside of the continental U.S. during their second year as long as they travel to the US embassy in their home country to renew their J1 visa before attempting to reenter the US. Au pairs should contact the Operations Team immediately if they are thinking about traveling.
Extended Insurance
Extended insurance is not necessary, but it is available and recommended. The au pair must purchase the insurance package based upon their length of stay and it must be purchased before the start of the extension period.

October 5, 2009 by davidfougere

Some people are surprised to learn that my family’s six au pairs have all been “in-country transfer” au pairs. That is, they have all come to our home after a short time as an au pair with another family. The truth is, we have found many benefits to welcoming au pairs that are already in the United States: 1) We have met each of them in person before inviting them to join our family. 2) It generally takes less time from finalizing our match to our au pair’s arrival in our home (sometimes as little as a week.) 3) We have had the option to consider au pairs with different lengths of time remaining on their visas—which often works better with our personal schedules. For these and many other reasons, host parents are discovering that “in-country transfers” are a good option. For us, they just work out.

To be fair, though, it is true that all of our au pairs didn’t work out in their first placement. Our first au pair had a tattoo that her family found objectionable and resulted in her having to move. We live in chilly New England, so we never actually saw it. The host parents of another of our au pairs felt that she was not up to the challenge of caring for their three children under three. The au pair, realizing she was in over her head, did her best while staying long enough for the family to find a replacement and then moved to our home. At the time, our son was 2, and he blossomed under that au pair’s one-to-one care and attention. Yet another of our au pairs butted heads regularly with one of her host children in her first family, a ten-year old girl. When it turned out that the situation was not workable in the long term, the parents and the au pair decided to call it quits. When we picked up our new au pair, the young girl triumphantly proclaimed “Victory!” to us as we loaded her bags into our car.

Every family has different values, childcare needs and parenting styles. One family may view a particular au pair as a “disaster” (I have heard families actually use this word!) but when that au pair moves to a new home she can find great success. Likewise, one au pair may be overwhelmed and frustrated by the hectic pace of a specific family, their changing schedule and unstructured environment, while another may feel completely at ease there and enjoy the “dynamic” home environment. Despite their false starts in their first placements, our own au pairs have been just what we needed at the time we needed it.

Make no mistake, I understand that the transition process is difficult and stressful for all parties involved. Our first priority as an organization is to prevent transitions from happening in the first place. Our mediation process encourages families and au pairs to work through issues and to resolve problems to keep matches together. LCCs offer an important resource for advice and mediation, and most problems and conflicts are resolved through LCC intervention. When it is determined that a family and au pair should separate, we thoroughly evaluate the case before proceeding with a new match for either host family or au pair. We assess the suitability of both parties for continued participation in the program. Every case is different, and every story has two sides. After our review, Cultural Care staff members ultimately make the final decision either to move forward or to remove an au pair or family from the program.

If a decision is made to match a transition au pair candidate with potential new host families, it is only after she/he undergoes a thorough re-screening process. We examine the details surrounding the reasons for the transition. We review LCC notes from mediations, exit interviews or personal conversations. Cultural Care program directors speak to the au pairs to understand their motivation level for continuing and set appropriate expectations for the rematch process. Cultural Care has a zero tolerance policy for conduct or behavior endangering the health and safety of host children or illegal activity of any kind. Finally, when a transition au pair enters the candidate pool to be considered for replacement, we have a policy of total transparency as to the reasons for transition. Families considering an “in country transfer” are given the full details of a candidate’s transition situation and provided with the contact information of an au pair’s previous families. When geographically possible we encourage a family to meet an in-country candidate in person.

The reasons for transitions are as varied as we are as families. Working with the au pair program as long as I have and reflecting on the experiences in our own home, I have come to understand that a “good” au pair is often times simply a matter of perspective. We have enjoyed some of our fondest moments as a family alongside our au pairs, and the care our sons received was top notch. If these six young women hadn’t been given the opportunity to succeed as an au pair even after their first placement, our lives may not have been enriched because of them. For reasons that I understand, they did not work out with their first families, but we consider ourselves lucky that our family was their second chance.

This means that during an au pair year, Au pair under J-1 must take, generally, two classes in a classroom-type setting at an American accredited School.
